This reputation is so prevalent that it’s almost grown into a subtitle: Mansfield Park: Austen’s Darkest, Most Controversial Novel. You see, Mansfield Park has a bit of a reputation. I was familiar with the story in my youth, probably from the 1983 BBC production, but I didn’t actually read it all the way through until I was 19 years old. It didn’t have the sparkle of Pride & Prejudice, the romance of Persuasion, or the humor of Northanger Abbey. I was a “Marianne,” my sister was an “Elinor,” and we shared a language of Austenian references and trivia with our mother.īut even in our house, Mansfield Park felt like a bit of a red-headed step child. Her way of looking at the world was familiar to me even before I learned about long division or the difference between a gerund and a participle. She was a culture, a dialect, a philosophy of life.
